Started painting

The painting has started and it is a mixed result. Initially I painted certain areas with Vallejo white. White is hard to make look right that is why I liking using Vallejo paints. It seems that it is a finer grain than others I have used. I usually have to put on 2 to 3 coats separated by several hours to get effective coverage. I then masked off the white areas. I sprayed Mr. Color RLM 65 Light Blue on the bottom of the aircraft and wings. This is not quite the correct color but since I will be over spraying with red, this is not a concern.

After allowing the paint to dry 24 hours, I masked off the necessary areas and sprayed Mr. Color Sail Color on the body and wings.

The cowling and the middle metal portion of the middle wing were sprayed Mr. Color RLM 71 Dark Green. Now comes the part I been dreading, the olive streaks. I used a real thin mixture of Tamiya thinner and Tamiya Khaki Drab (about 80% thinner to 20% paint). I slowly built up the paint on the wing attempting to make streaks and light areas. I am not happy about my first attempt. Since I will be covering it up later, I will live with it.

Next I will work on the body and hopefully my technique will improve

  1. The engine & the guns look amazing. I just picked up Roden\'s 1:72 Albatros D.V. (Manfred\'s), and will be studying your builds to hopefully carry mine out semi-successfully. You going to Octoberfest? I\'m still on the fence about it. Need to finish some new stuff if I hope to possibly compete.

  2. Thanks.  I am not brave enough yet to try a 1/72 bi-plane.  I did pick up Manfred\'s Albratros but in 1/32 scale.  I will be at Octoberfest.  Not many models done though - I have a Bf-109 and hopefully the Fokker will be done by then.  Also, my little girl will be entering a 1/144 Zaku II that we put together.  Hope to see you there.  Do you know when Omaha show is?  They haven\'t posted it yet - are they going for the Regionals?

  3. I haven\'t heard when the Omaha show is going to be. I\'m guessing March-something. Ask me again after the 13th--that\'s my next club meeting and we have a lot of ties to Omaha. And Omaha did get the Regionals, so look forward to that. I\'m still not sure on KC on the 20th--October is a really tight month, financially, due to some changes being made in our payroll system at work. If I\'m there, I\'ll be bringing the Corsair, the Doppelganger, and a couple other things. Hope to see you, your planes, and the Zaku there!
