The Flying Razor

This is another project I started about 9 months ago and have been sloooowly putting it together.  It Eduard’s 1/ 48 Fokker D VIII.  So far it is an excellent kit and all the mistakes have been my own fault.  I was planning to build this for an upcoming model show but ran into big problems that suck out my enthusiasm to complete this plane.  I am now just trying to finish it, as the back log of unfinished models is growing.

The detail on this kit is excellent.  I love cockpit and believe, to date, it is one of Eduard’s best.  I love the way they built the frame around the cockpit – I wish they had done this with their Fokker D VII kits.

The problem I ran into was with the engine.  It has three parts and one is a PE part.  It looks good when completed, but I had rushed the assembly and the parts did not line up correctly making it a little bit to long.  The created a problem as the cowling did not fit flush to the fuselage.  I could not take the engine apart as it would have broken all the small parts.  Finally, I decided to just carve an indention into back wall and now the engine sits better but it is not perfect.  This is one of those live and learn experiences.

The rest of the assembly went to together fine.  I primed the fuselage and painted the hood with Mr. Color’s Olive Drab (color call out in instructions).  I don’t think this shade of green is correct but oh well, I am moving on.  I then sprayed Future all over the body and let it set for two days.

Lastly, I applied the decals.  The entire Fuselage is covered with Lozenge camouflage.  The Eduard decals are likely the best decals I have every worked with – they are very forgiving and go over difficult surfaces without an issue.   In going around curves surfaces (rudder, wing, etc) it is best to put several vary small cuts around the bend to help it lay down better or else the decal tend to fold creating wrinkles.

I hope to finish this kit in the next couple weeks.
