In the beginning

This is the “Weekend” edition of Eduard’s Albatros D. III.  Eduard has been releasing several of their WWI bi-planes under this new line.  Basically, they are the same as their original models without PE sets and only 1 choice of decals.  The instructions are printed on one sheet (no biggie – go to their website to download a better versions).

I have already built their Hanriot HD 1.  It was a lot fun but I messed it up big time (I dropped it and it broke into several pieces).  I finished it but it was never right.

The “Weekend” versions are a great value, around $10, and a great introduction into building WWI models.  If it gets messed up you haven’t invested much money.

I started this on Saturday.  No problems putting engine together and painted it with MM burnt metal.  Let the paint dry a day and painted the cylinders black and the piping cooper.  I will get pictures up when it is finished.

Also started on the cockpit.  Glued all the parts into the cockpit that I could fit in without making it to tight.  Painted all the wood areas with Vallejo Wood, the seat with Tamiya Hull Red and the ammo case with Vallejo Model Air Aluminum (I am trying this out to see if I like it as much as MM Aluminum).

Next up is painting the cockpit to look like wood.

  1. I\'d love to see more pictures of this build-up. I\'ve got an Eduard "W.E." Pfalz IIIa at the top of my backlog pile and I\'m anxious to see how your Albatross turns out.

  2. I really like the color scheme of WE Pfalz - red and purple, it will look neat when done.  Actually it was a toss up between the two but I wanted to try a wood scheme.
